Predator Free Dunedin is throwing everything but the kitchen sink into catching the last possums on the Otago Peninsula, including the latest technology.Drones, AI, conservation dogs and self-resetting traps are all in the toolbox. It's all hands on deck with dedicated delivery partners and an engaged community. This is a fantastic example of a project on the verge of reaching predator free by continuing to adopt new ways of doing things.

It's fantastic to have Tourism Industry Aotearoa backing the predator free goal. As we continue to witness the beneficial effects of this important mahi, we hope that an increasing number of organisations will also get on board. The predator-free movement, which involves thousands of people countrywide, not only protects biodiversity but also brings communities together and inspires hope for the survival of our taonga species.#predatorfree2050 #conservation #support

This week our Project Support Manager Nathan McNally will be attending the Invercargill NETS Conference hosted by the New Zealand Biosecurity Institute (NZBI).Our friends at @NZBI are one of the biggest networks of on-the-ground biosecurity practitioners in Aotearoa New Zealand. Every year, NZBI runs Biosecurity Week which is taking place this week and finishes on July 28. During this time NZBI provides tools and resources as well as interesting activities to help schools participate. It's also a good time to brush up on biosecurity risk prevention techniques.Visit the NZBI website to learn more.https://lnkd.in/g2G9zjshImage: Robust Grasshopper by Jennifer SchoriThe robust grasshopper is New Zealand's largest lowland grasshopper and is only found along the edges of the braided rivers of the Mackenzie Basin.

We thought we would share Te Korowai o Waiheke's little furry friend, Alfie, with you since we think that stories about adorable doggos are a terrific way to start the week! Little heroes like Alfie will assist in locating the remaining stoats on Waiheke Island.#predatorfree2050 #conservationdogs #Waihekeisland

New technology is changing how we do predator control. The Envico Technologies team have been busy prepping Wairakei Estate with their Spitfire possum smart traps. The Spitfire is a self-resetting, long life toxin delivery device, designed for efficient pest control in remote locations. The device uses an automatic lure dispenser to attract pests, then a sensor array to accurately detect the target pest and differentiate it from non-target species. Once the target pest triggers the device, liquid toxin is squirted onto the target’s stomach which is then ingested during grooming. With each Spitfire device containing 100 lethal doses, a Spitfire device can be left unattended for 1 year without any maintenance or refills required which significantly reduces the personnel hours and operational costs that are currently required for maintaining traditional bait stations and traps. We are proud to have supported the development of the Spitfire and we're excited to see the Spitfires being used increasingly throughout Aotearoa.

Te Korowai o Waiheke was one of our first funded projects and we are always impressed with the mahi that's taking place. The Waiheke Island community is passionate about their environment. There are more than 40 neighbourhood predator control groups actively doing their part to help Waiheke Island become a unique haven for native birds and wildlife.

👊🏼 💚 Super well done to Stephen Mushin and our great mates at the Predator Free New Zealand Trust for this GREAT article on how a NZ-born technology revolution is helping to rewild Aotearoa New Zealand......all so our native birds, other animals, bugs and plants can thrive once again, by removing introduced predators. 🦉 🦎 🐤 🐀 Thanks for the acknowledgement, Steve - "In Wellington, and across the country,Predator Free 2050 Limitedand the Department of Conservation (DOC) have helped kick-startdozens of companies – to develop, test and manufacture rewilding innovations. And increasingly these gadgets are being exported to help to rewild the world."Steve writes that Wellington, NZ is the best city to illustrate high-tech urban rewilding. He's talking about you, Predator Free Wellington, the Capital Kiwi Project (both of whom we fund/support) and Zealandia Ecosanctuary! It's amazing what you do for Aotearoa's capital city. Tory Whanau and Laurie Foon, just another chance to feel super proud of your city. 💚

Do you know how many people are doing their part for the predator free movement? You might be surprised. It’s National Volunteer Week and we wanted to take a moment to recognise the thousands of volunteers around the motu who devote their time, energy, and resources to helping Aotearoa achieve its predator free 2050 goal. Our pals at the Predator Free New Zealand Trust have created a map to demonstrate how significant the work taking place is. Every red dot represents a community, hapū/iwi, or private landowner-led predator control effort, and these are just the ones that have registered on the site. If you want to get involved in one of our most important national efforts, we encourage you to join a volunteer group near you and become a part of an ever-growing community that is helping our native taonga species thrive.Take a closer look at the interactive map to see what activity might be going on in your neck of the woods.https://lnkd.in/gxaCRa-9
